“So, fellow internet surfer,” I say, peering through the 0100’s of cyberspace. “We meet again.”
I notice the subtle twitch at the corner of your mouth and I know my charm is working. Confidently, I smirk back.
“You just couldn’t stay away now could you? No,” I cackle and reach for my warm milk and cookies. “I knew you couldn’t. Already I’ve bated you. I’ve drawn you in. Already you’ve browsed a bit. I knew it would come to this.”
You think you hear the snap of my gingersnap. Nervously, you bite your bottom lip then slowly, you smile, thinking I can’t see you.
“Well you’re wrong!” I say slapping the crumbs from my lip. “You’ve barely begun to scratch this surface!” Cookie crumbs fly from my mouth as I try to say things like superfluous. I fail and continue. “To learn more, you must delve deeper. I know this. You know this! And you will. Ah, yes, Fellow Internet Surfer. You will.”
Your stomach tightens as you realize I speak the truth. To move deeper, you must read on. There is no question. You’ll do it. And you know this. You know I know this. You know, somehow, the Uncle Mervin you didn’t know you had until now knows it.”
“But how!? you ask.
“Because,” I say, “I’ve piqued your curiosity. I’ve irked your consciousness. And now you can’t help but wonder what other snippets of dialogue I’ve scatter about my blog.”
You pay no mind to the sounds around you. I’ve sucked you into my world. You forgot, for the last two minutes about everything, but me, this moment, and my cookies.
“Go on then!” I challenge. “See if you can out wit me! See if you can walk away and not tell others about this moment! You’ll barely be able to find the words to describe what this…is. I barely know myself!”
And with a well-rehearsed flourish, I chug back my warm milk and slam the empty cup to my desk. And I am gone.
For now.
