…your hand rests on your mouse, eagerly waiting for the moment I bore you. We exchange a hardened look of questioning (which is particularly difficult for me as I am in cyberspace). I break the silence by telling you that I am an author. And, although I am witty, shy, and down to earth, I have a wily sense… (I pause for effect)… of humor that keeps you intrigued. For this, you read on.
“So, fellow internet surfer…” I purr the words through the cyber world. “We meet at last.”
“What do you want with me?” you ask, and I release one of those short maniacal laughs that leave you pinned with uncertainty to your chair. Should you click back to the previous page? Should you stay and read? Dare you laugh? You must admit, already you find yourself… amused.
“You will stay to read and I will tell you why,” I say as I intertwine my fingers and lean closer toward the monitor, “because you still haven’t determined if I have anything of importance to say or not. And, you are curious.”
By now you have forgotten all about the mouse beneath your hand, or the power you have to end this now with a click of a button. But you won’t.
“You are curious,” I say again, “Curious to see if I am worth hearing, curious to see if I am worth your time. Curious to see how this will end.”
Now I have you. Your attention is mine. You sit as my judge and I wait. I know my future hangs in the balance, but I remain calm. I know what it is I have to say. I know you will read. I alone know that it will win you over.
“So judge me!” I say. “Read on for yourself and decide! Read my words! Know me! Judge me! Then have a cookie.”
