I recall Rowling, Potter 7, when I read about Harry, Ron, and Hermione, hiding in the forests of Scotland. I swear that span would never end. It didn’t drag. Rowling just captured their anxiety so well that I felt I was there with them for months. I was certain that purgatory would never end. On my second re-read, I was surprised that that same section only lasted a whopping five chapters or so.
I have many a reader now coming to me about a particular section in Dolor and Shadow. Some tell me it drags while others have reported it such Hel that they want it to be over. I smile knowing the section. If you’ve ever read Broken, you’ll see my own Hel shine through in Dolor and Shadow. I call it, the Dvergar scenes. That is enough for readers to say, “Oh my god, yes!”
“It isn’t that it drags,” one reader said. “It’s that you feel every bit of that hell with her.”
And that is exactly what I wanted. Nevertheless, sometimes, knowing there is an end is all that matters. So this is a mercy spoiler. If you are at that point in Dolor and Shadow where you just want to get the Hel out of those caves, rest assured, the section is really only three chapters long. You’ll see the skies again in chapter 41.
